Christmas in the Smokies

Christmas in the Smokies

The Fall days are long gone and the cold weather has arrived, and the holiday season is right around the corner. I hope everyone gets to spend some time in the Great Smoky Mountains around the holidays. Christmas in the mountains can be magical for the whole family. We have close to 15 million lights twinkling throughout the entire town. The gleaming lights begin in Kodak at exit 407 and continue for the next 25 miles lighting a path all the way to the small town of Gatlinburg. These lights are a big part of the Smoky Mountain Winterfest that takes place every year and they bring many visitors to the area. I remember enjoying driving around as a child and enjoying the abundance of glimmering  lights with my family and have continued to do the same with my husband and daughter. There is nothing quite like a Smoky Mountain Christmas and the memories that are made during this wonderful time of year.

There are many great Christmas Activities to do as a family while visiting Pigeon Forge and the surrounding area including Dollywood, Christmas Shows, Shopping, and much more. It is hard to narrow down a Top 5 list of things to do in the area at Christmas, but I will tell you some of my family’s favorite holiday traditions that make this time of year magical and memorable.

  1. Christmas Place

You can not come to Pigeon Forge and not stop at the Christmas Place Store. They have so many ideas for Christmas gifts, trees, and ornaments. This is the perfect place to pick up the souvenir for the family trip. We always like to pick out a personalized ornament that relates to the year we have had. We hang them on the tree each year to remind us of the memories made in the mountains from year to year.

  1. Christmas Shows

Pigeon Forge is a great place to see wonderful Christmas shows to really get you in the Christmas Spirit.  A personal favorite of ours is the Smoky Mountain Opry. The show includes wonderful, talented singers and dancers. Another thing the opry is known for is the live animals they incorporate in to their show! My daughter loved the White Tiger they had in previous years. I would also recommend Country Tonite for their show during the holidays. Not only is it a great show, but they offer our resort guest an amazing deal that you can not pass up. When you purchase when ticket at full price then they will give you a free ticket. Who can pass up such a great deal at buy one, get one free. The Country Tonite has been voted the #1 show in the Smokies since I can remember. The variety show contains singing, dancing, comedy, and so much more entertainment.

  1. Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland

Shadrack’s Christmas has been coming to Sevierville for several years now. They are open daily from the first part of November all the way to January 6th. Rain, Snow, or Sleet the show must go on! Enjoy the show of the warmth of your vehicle. The synchronized lights have amazing detail and go perfectly with the music that plays directly from your car radio. Shadrack’s offers more than beautiful Christmas lights. You will find Santa’s Workshop at the end of the show. You can meet Santa and have your picture made. Do not forget to visit their Petting Zoo and Kids Zone. The Kids will love the inflatables. You can warm up with Hot Cocoa or Coffee and fill your belly with some delicious treats they offer.

  1. Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

More magic can be found within a short drive of our mountain town. Ranking pretty high on my list of things to enjoy this time of year with the family is The Polar Express which is located over the mountain in Bryson City, North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad sets off from Bryson City to head to the North Pole while capturing the magic of the Polar Express Movie. The excitement on the kid’s faces and the hot cocoa are worth every penny. You will find Santa Claus waiting at the North Pole to greet each child and present them each with their own silver bell. My family’s favorite part is they encourage you to wear your favorite Christmas jammies. Who doesn’t like comfort and hot cocoa on a cold winter day? I promise you will enjoy the ride and it will be time well spent with your family.

  1. Dollywood

Dollywood is at the top of my list as a must see during their Smoky Mountain Christmas  Festival. The popular amusement park is a favorite all year long for many guests visiting the area, but they knock Christmas out of the park. The award winning festival has been voted the best in America for over a decade.  In previous years the popular attraction alone had 4 Million Lights inside their amusement park and continues to expand year after year. This year I am thrilled about their newest addition, Glacier Ridge. Glacier Ridge brings a recreation of the Northern lights, a new Christmas Light Show, and a Winter Wonderland to the park which adds an additional 1 million lights to the streets of Dollywood. The lights alone put me in the holiday spirit, but I highly recommend catching one of many of the shows throughout the park while enjoying hot chocolate or warm apple cider. Christmas in the Smokies is a favorite of mine, but am looking forward to seeing It’s a Wonderful Life this year.  For all the thrill seekers visiting Dollywood they should be sure to view the gleaming lights from some of Dollywood’s amazing roller coasters. The Wild Eagle is the smoothest of the coasters, but the speed may keep you from seeing the lights. Don’t let that stop you though. You would not believe the spectacular site unless you witness if for yourself. Just be sure to go when the temperatures are above freezing otherwise the roller coasters will be shut down for below freezing temperatures. Even if the temperatures are low I guarantee you will love the amusement park with warm family memories that will last a lifetime.

I hope some of these holiday traditions are as fun for your family as they are mine. We look forward to hearing about the new traditions your family will continue to enjoy year after year.
