Dollywood and our Pigeon Forge Campground
Dollywood is located approximately 6 miles from River Plantation RV Resort. Dollywood is Dolly Parton’s popular Pigeon Forge attraction Dollywood. The theme park has be open and operating under its current name since 1986. Prior to the theme park being known as Dollywood the park has had many other names including Rebel Railroad, Goldrush Junction, and Silver Dollar City! Dollywood is now the most visited tourist attraction in the state of Tennessee. The popular attraction has now expanded to 150 acres of Family Fun and thrilling rides with 2.5 people visiting each year. They have many more expansions in the works. Dolly is always introducing new things to the park. Let us tell you about some of the exciting rides and entertainment you can enjoy while visiting the theme park.
Dollywood made its first major roller coaster expansion in April of 1999. The Tennessee Tornado was the first coaster to be added to Dollywood. This coaster hits speeds of 70 MPH with drops as high as 128 FT and a 110 Ft loop. In the 2008 operating season the crew added video cameras to the coaster and guests are able to view their video and upload it to Youtube. The next coaster added was Thunderhead in 2004. Thunderhead is a wooden coaster with 22 turn and 32 crossovers. Dollywood’s steel coaster, Mystery Mine, travels 1,811 feet of track set in an abandoned coal mine with an 85 foot vertical drop into total darkness. Dollywood opened The Wild Eagle in 2012. The Wild Eagle is the first winged roller coaster in America. This coaster reaches a height of 210 FT and 61 Mph. In 2014 Dollywood opened its first Dual Coaster. The Firechaser Express is themed around several Volunteer Fire Departments from the Great Smoky Mountains in the 1940’s. This is a favorite among children that visit the theme park. While Dollywood has its fair share of amazing roller coasters not everyone enjoys the thrill and excitement of them. The theme park has so much more to enjoy while in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Dollywood has captured the the excitement of a carnival in their Country Fair area. There are old fashioned games, food, and rides. The carnival like rides include Bumper Cars, Classic Ferris Wheel, the Vintage Carousel, and so much more. Be sure to catch the beautiful view of the Great Smoky Mountains from the top of the Ferris Wheel. It is a breathtaking sight you will not want to miss. There are so many other rides in the park that the kids will enjoy. Speed over to Rockin Raceway and cruise around in a miniature classic car. You could get the chance to ride in style in a Thunderbird, Cadillac, or it could even be a Corvette. Your ears will appreciate the sound of Classic Oldies playing while you make your way around.
If you visit Dollywood during the summer months then you may be looking for a little relief from the hot sun! Be sure to hop on the Smoky Mountain River Rampage on a hot summer day at Dollywood. Expect to get soaked on this White Water Rafting Adventure ride. There are also a few other water rides to enjoy at the popular theme park. The mountain slidewinder slides down the mountainside with twist and turns along the way. Then there is Daredevil Falls. Enjoying a relaxing boat ride through calm waters until you reach the falls. You can guess what happens next. Hold on tight! The park does have multiple dryers available throughout the park to help speed up drying your clothing attire. You can even purchase tickets to both parks. Check out their Splash and Play ticket. The pass holder receives 3 Days of play at both theme parks for a discounted rate.
Dollywood has many different festivals during their operating season. Whether it is Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter the festivals are an amazing perk when visiting the theme park. The popular theme park also has some of the greatest entertainers in the industry performing throughout the theaters in the park. Dollywood kicks off its season with the Festival Of Nations. This gives visitors the opportunity to experience cultures from around the world by trying different foods and enjoying performances from these different cultures. We always hate to see Summer go, but enjoy the crisp air the Fall brings. Dollywood has a wonderful Harvest Festival that includes southern gospel bands, artisans from around the world, and The 2nd Annual Great Pumpkin LumiNights. When the sun goes down Timber Canyon transforms into a whimsical scene with artistic sculptures. If you have not experienced a Smoky Mountain Christmas you are definitely missing out. You can get a taste of the experience by visiting Dollywood during their Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival. The park has spectacular light display averaging over 4 Million Lights throughout the park. Be sure to catch a ride on the the Dollywood Express for a trip around the park. This a wonderful way to see the many different light displays from a different view. The Dollywood Express is the longest running attraction in the theme park’s history. It originally opened in 1961 when the park was known as Rebel Railroad. Do not miss the spectacular lineup of Christmas shows to get you in the spirit of the holiday. The popular theme park does close down after the New Year for a couple of months, but they did extend their season until January 5th.
